Mats Ek once again challenged conventions with Juliet & Romeo, his personal reinterpretation of the Shakespearean myth for the Royal Swedish Ballet. Created in 2013 to mark the company's 240th anniversary, this choreography dispenses with Prokofiev's score in favor of a selection of pieces by Tchaikovsky. The inverted title of the ballet not only asserts Juliet's central role, as she is referred to here, but also anticipates a subversion of the traditional narrative: Ek's irreverent style, with awkward and cheeky movements and the absence of iconic elements such as the balcony, swords, or poison vial, foregrounds the youthful tenderness of the lovers as the true core of the drama.
